In 2014, a major shift in the strategic directions of SMSB (SMSB Strategy 2014 – 2018) resulted in the establishment of the Educational Development Centre (EDC, 2014). EDC was introduced as an advisory and liaising body to provide technical support to the specialty Councils of SMSB in line with the strategic directions. Through its rich talent pool, EDC has been assigned with:

  1. Reviewing the curricula and programs offered by the Councils.
  2. Assisting the specialty Councils with building the capacity of faculty and staff
  3. Promoting research and publications.
  4. Ensuring the continuous, quality training of the Councils’ candidates.

The Curricula and Programs Unit (CPU) is the unit responsible for the development and review of SMSB's curricula and programmes. Furthermore, CPU is also assigned with guiding and evaluating the curricula of the various specialty Councils of the Sudan Medical Specialization Board.

Terms of Reference and Functions

  1. Preparation of the Unit's annual action plan and its endorsement by EDC's management.
  2. Documenting and implementing the recommendations of EDC's Supreme Committee.
  3. Development of curricula in light of the approach approved for the general curricula framework.
  4. Arranging workshops, under the supervision of EDC's senior management and Supreme Committee, to monitor the process for the adoption and endorsement of the curricula.
  5. Arrangement of scientific seminars and sequels in coordination with EDC's management for the assessment, revision and enhancement of the developed curricula abreast with the latest scientific progress.
  6. Constitution of different methods of assessment such as questionnaires and regulatory frameworks, for the assessment of the curricula (through collaboration with EDC's Quality and Accreditation Unit).

Coordinating with SMSB's Secretary of Academic Affairs, the Director of Training in each of the specialty Councils and the Coordinator of the Professional Programmes for the most suitable means of curricular development and feedback

The Training and Development Unit (TDU) is the unit responsible for the training and professional development of SMSB's candidates and faculty. TDU is assigned with the proposition, planning, preparation and delivery of courses, programmes and activities in the field of medical education for the development of the core competences and knowledge of the candidates and faculty conforming to international standards and in line with both internal and external accreditation.

Terms of Reference and Functions

  1. Preparation of the unit's annual action plan and its endorsement by EDC's management.
  2. Rapporteur for EDC's Supreme Committee.
  3. Documenting and implementing the recommendations of the Supreme Committee.
  4. Liaising with the Secretary of Academic Affairs and Secretary of Planning and Information Technology to provide EDC with an up-to-date and complete record of the personal and professional data of SMSB's faculty, staff and trainers.
  5. Liaising with the Secretary of Planning and Information Technology to identify the training gaps and needs of SMSB's faculty.
  6. Developing superlative methods and programmes that are specifically tailored to enhance the knowledge and skills of SMSB's faculty members and implementing these activities through workshops, training courses, seminars and any other innovative methods of instruction.
  7. Preparation and implementation of training activities for the development of the knowledge, skills and ethics of the candidates enrolled across the various disciplines (i.e. specialty Councils) of SMSB; the training activities for the candidates will be developed in accordance with the graduation requirements that were endorsed by SMSB's Consultative Council.
  8. Training of trainers (TOTs) in the field of medical education development.

Implementation of all other duties and tasks assigned to the Unit by the Secretary General of SMSB or the Director of EDC

The Research and Publications Unit (RPU) is responsible for the promotion of evidence-based, scientific research, enhancement of the research skills and capacity of the candidates/trainees and provision of technical support in the area of research. It is also responsible for arranging creative activities related to the discipline of research, publishing scientific/medical journals, and collaborating with all other similar research institutions nationally, regionally and internationally.

 

Terms of Reference and Functions

1. Preparation of the Unit's annual action plan and its endorsement by EDC's management.

2. Identify the ideal areas of research for SMSB's candidates and faculty in cooperation with the specialty Councils.

3. Development and monitoring of the framework for Ethical Clearance for the conduction of research within any of the specialty Councils.

4. Endorsement of the research proposals of SMSB's candidates and faculty and establishment of the guidelines for the clearance of the research papers submitted by SMSB's candidates.

5. Provision of substantial technical support to the candidates and faculty for conduction and submission of their research papers. .

6. Assisting the researchers (candidates and faculty) with publishing their research papers in reputable journals.

7. Drafting and publishing the monthly issue of SMSB's "The Bulletin" newsletter.

8. Keeping abreast of the most recent developments and technologies in the scientific and medical world and collaborating with national, regional and international organizations for the conduction of scientific studies at SMSB following approval by SMSB’s management.

9. Recommending to SMSB’s Secretary General the participation of SMSB in national, regional and international conferences of benefit to the Board

10. Uploading and updating all of EDC’s activities, programmes and achievements on SMSB’s website (Worldwide Web).

The Quality and Accreditation Unit (QUA) is the unit mandated with the development of the quality control policies, regulations and standards for SMSB to promote continuous development. QUA is responsible for the assessment and evaluation of the training activities of the Board, creating the terms of reference (TORs) and duties of faculty and staff, application of quality assurance to all of the activities and functions of SMSB's specialty Councils, and establishment of the programs and tools for quality measurement.

 

Terms of Reference and Functions

 

1. Setting the standards, policies and regulations required for sustaining the high quality of training in SMSB.

2. Collaborating with the medical Councils and other related parties of the Board to determine the mechanisms for the supervision and monitoring of the training and all non-training procedures of SMSB.

3. Overseeing the preparations and requirements for national and international accreditation.

4. Working alongside SMSB's management in establishing an applicable framework for internal and external accreditation.

5. Developing a structure that raises awareness to the importance, need and applicability of a holistic approach to quality assurance and accreditation within and without SMSB.

Drafting the tasks, terms of reference and grade of the employees.

7. Evaluating and statistically analysing the quality of training programs through the established frameworks for evaluation and statistical analysis
